Schiphol or Rotterdam: which is actually faster?

Flying from Rotterdam instead of Schiphol changes the airborne time by at most 4 minutes on European sectors, and to southern destinations Rotterdam is marginally shorter. The choice is therefore decided by drive time and time on the ground, not by the flight.

We computed it rather than guessed

The assumption behind this question is that the big airport must be the fast one. So we ran the same block-time model from both fields, to the same six destinations, in the same aircraft — the Midsize jet (Cessna Citation Latitude) at 405 kt long-range cruise.

Computed block times from Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) and Rotterdam The Hague (RTM), midsize jet. Method identical to our flight-time model. Computed 2026-09-01.

The largest difference across the set is 4 minutes, and it runs in Rotterdam's favour on southern routes because Rotterdam sits about 50 km closer to them. In practical terms the two airports are airborne equivalents. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.

So where does the time actually go?

Into the ground segment, which this model deliberately does not measure because it depends on your day. Three components matter.

  • Drive time. The largest variable and the only one you fully control. From The Hague, Rotterdam is obviously closer. From Amsterdam-North, Schiphol is. This alone usually decides it.
  • Taxi time. Schiphol is a large airport with six runways and heavy scheduled traffic. Rotterdam has one runway. The taxi difference is real and consistently favours Rotterdam.
  • Sequencing. At Schiphol a business jet fits around scheduled traffic. At peak hours that can mean waiting; at Rotterdam it rarely does.

None of this makes Schiphol a bad choice. It makes it a choice that has to be justified by something other than speed.

When Schiphol is the right answer

  • Short notice. Schiphol's General Aviation Terminal handles around 4,500 business jet movements a year, so the odds that a suitable aircraft is already there are simply better. If nothing is at Rotterdam, you pay to fly one in.
  • Unusual aircraft. The larger the type or the more specific the requirement, the more the wider pool matters.
  • Connecting from a scheduled flight. Obvious, but worth stating: if you land at Schiphol, leave from Schiphol.
  • You live north or west of Amsterdam. Drive time beats everything else in this article.

When Rotterdam is the right answer

  • You are in or near the southern Randstad. The Hague, Delft, Rotterdam itself.
  • You want the shortest possible ground time. One runway, one FBO, on-site immigration and customs.
  • You are flying south. Marginally shorter in the air, as the table shows.
  • The aircraft is already there. Which is a question worth asking rather than assuming.

What about parking the aircraft?

On a day return the aircraft usually waits for you, and where it waits costs money. Parking fees at a busy hub can exceed the landing fee, and at peak times a large airport may not want a business jet occupying a stand for eight hours at all. A quieter field is generally cheaper and more relaxed about it.

On a multi-day trip the calculation flips again: rather than park for four days, the aircraft normally flies home and comes back, which means two more positioning legs. Whether parking or repositioning is cheaper depends on the airport and the gap, and it is worth asking rather than assuming — the answer occasionally changes which field you should leave from in the first place.

How to decide in one minute

Compare your door-to-airport drive time for each field. If the difference is more than about fifteen minutes, that decides it — nothing in the air will claw that back. If the two drives are similar, take whichever field the aircraft is already at, because that removes a positioning leg and therefore cost.

If you are not in the Randstad at all, neither may be right. Our guide to private jet airports in the Netherlands covers Eindhoven, Groningen Eelde, Lelystad and Maastricht, and the honest answer for the south-east is sometimes a Belgian or German field. Tell us where you actually are and we will work backwards from that rather than from a map of airports.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Rotterdam really as fast as Schiphol?

In the air, yes — our computed block times differ by at most four minutes across six European destinations, and Rotterdam is slightly shorter to the south because it sits further that way. On the ground Rotterdam is usually faster, because there is less taxiing and less traffic to sequence into.

Can every private jet use Rotterdam?

Rotterdam’s runway is 2,200 m, which accommodates every class we charter, from light jets to large long-range aircraft. Very long sectors that leave with full fuel are the case worth checking, because those are the flights that need the most runway.

Why would I choose Schiphol then?

Aircraft availability at short notice. Schiphol handles far more business aviation movements, so there is a better chance a suitable aircraft is already there. If it is not, you pay to position one in — which is exactly the cost our positioning guide covers.

Does the airport change the price?

Yes, through landing and handling fees and through positioning. A smaller field is often cheaper on both, but only if a suitable aircraft is nearby. We quote both when the difference is material.
