Private jet at cruise altitude above a cloud layer

Why the range in the brochure is not your range

A brochure range is measured with a light cabin, still air, long-range cruise speed and a fixed fuel reserve. Fill the seats, fly faster or meet a headwind and it shrinks. A 60-knot headwind alone removes about 14% of a heavy jet's range, which is why a sector near the limit usually means a fuel stop.

What a range figure actually says

"Range 2,700 nm" reads like a property of the aircraft. It is a result of a test with conditions attached, and the conditions are the point. The Citation Latitude's 2,700 nm is quoted with four passengers and two crew. The Phenom 300E's 2,010 nm is quoted with five occupants at long-range cruise. Both assume still air, standard temperature and NBAA IFR reserves — enough fuel left on arrival to divert to an alternate airport and hold.

Change any of those and the number changes. The figure is honest; it is just not a promise about your trip.

The four things that shrink it

  • Payload. An aircraft has one maximum take-off weight. People and luggage share it with fuel. Eight passengers and their bags where the brochure assumed four can displace enough fuel to take a meaningful bite out of range.
  • Speed. Long-range cruise is the slowest efficient speed. The Latitude's 446 kt high-speed cruise burns more per mile than its 405 kt long-range cruise, and range falls accordingly. Ask for the fast option and you are trading range for time.
  • Wind. The aircraft flies through the air at its cruise speed; the ground goes past at that speed plus or minus the wind. A headwind reduces ground speed and therefore miles per kilogram of fuel, in direct proportion.
  • Conditions at the airports. A hot day or a high-altitude field limits take-off weight, which limits fuel. Alpine airports in summer are the textbook case.

The wind arithmetic, per class

Wind is the factor you can quantify from a brochure alone, so we did. Effective range is brochure range multiplied by ground speed over airspeed, at each class's published long-range cruise. Everything else held equal.

Effective still-air-equivalent range under a steady headwind, per class. Brochure range × (cruise − wind) ÷ cruise, at published long-range cruise. Computed 2026-09-13.

Ninety knots is not exotic. Winter jet streams over the North Atlantic and the eastbound Gulf routes produce winds of that order at cruise altitude. On such a day a heavy jet sold as a 4,000 nm aircraft is, for planning purposes, a 3,153 nm one — before anyone has boarded.

What it means for a real sector

Take Amsterdam to Dubai, about 2,790 nm great-circle in our flight-time table. A heavy jet with 4,000 nm in the brochure looks comfortable. Load it to twelve people with luggage, meet a 60 kt winter headwind, and the working range in the table above is 3,435 nm before payload — a margin that a full cabin can consume. That is why the honest quote for that trip on a Challenger-class aircraft sometimes carries a fuel stop, and why a longer-range type is offered instead when the schedule cannot take one. The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix guide works through exactly this case for the season finale.

Conversely, a midsize jet with 2,700 nm is entirely adequate for anything in Europe, because the longest European sectors from Amsterdam are under 1,400 nm. Range only bites at the edges.

How to read a quote with this in mind

  • If the proposed aircraft's brochure range is within about a fifth of your sector length, ask whether a fuel stop is planned and what it adds. It is usually 40 to 60 minutes on the ground and less money than moving up a class.
  • Tell us the real passenger count and the real luggage. The weight of what you bring is a range input, not a packing question.
  • Ask which cruise speed the flight is planned at. Fast is legitimately faster, and it is also legitimately shorter-legged.

None of this is a reason to distrust a range figure. It is a reason to treat it as the top of a scale rather than the bottom, and to let the operator plan the fuel — which is exactly what they are for. Send us the sector and the passenger count and we will tell you whether it is non-stop before you decide anything else.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What conditions is a brochure range measured at?

Typically a specified light passenger load, long-range cruise speed, still air, standard temperature and NBAA IFR reserves, which set aside fuel for a diversion and holding. The Phenom 300E's 2,010 nm is quoted with five occupants; the Citation Latitude's 2,700 nm with four passengers and two crew. Every published range carries conditions like these.

Does a full cabin really reduce range?

Yes. Every aircraft has a maximum take-off weight. Passengers and bags count against it, and on a long sector what they displace is fuel. A cabin full of people and luggage on a flight near the aircraft's limit is the most common reason a "non-stop" route needs a stop.

How much does a headwind cost?

In proportion to cruise speed. At a long-range cruise of 425 kt, a 60 kt headwind cuts ground speed by 14%, and range with it. Westbound transatlantic and eastbound sectors into the Gulf in winter regularly see winds of that order.

Should I always pick an aircraft with range to spare?

Pick one whose brochure range comfortably exceeds the sector after allowing for load and wind, not one that just matches it. A margin of a few hundred miles is normal planning, not caution. If the margin is thin, a fuel stop of 40 to 60 minutes is usually cheaper than moving up a class.
